I enjoy doodling… always scribbling marks and faces and random shapes on scraps of paper. Many times a line or shape quickly growing into an imagined odd machine, or a doodle of a face quickly growing into a defined character. Sometimes I’ll purposely give a sketch a sci-fi/alien creature spin to it, inventing an imagined future world character or creature. This sci-fi imagery is all just for the fun of it, for my own amusement, as it has nothing to do with my usual editorial and advertising assignments, nor with my picture book projects either. Because I’m compelled for some unknot reason to keep making such alien creature doodles and sketches I even have an entire section on my web site displaying some of my favorites. The sketch posted here is of a cyborg warrior character at a repair station getting its arm repaired and replaced. I began this doodle like all of them, without any preplanned intention… I just started drawing a face of a tough looking character then drawing his chest and right shoulder… then when I was about to draw the left shoulder my “alien creature” mode kicked in and I decided to draw the character with its arm missing and instead drew the repair apparatus, cables, machinery, etc… It is a very simple line drawing. I invented the character and the apparatus from my own imagination and as usual with all my doodles not using any reference at all which would only interfere with the creative process.
